EV Show Plates: Display-Only Badges and Styles for Electric Cars

EV Show Plates: Display-Only Badges and Styles for Electric Cars

Are EV show plates road legal? No. An EV show plate is made for display, not driving. It is for car shows, garage walls and photography. That rule holds whether the car runs on electricity, petrol or diesel. Fit one to a car that is used or parked on a public road and that is an offence. What this page is really about is the part you do get to choose: the badge, the spacing and the finishing touches on a show plate built for an electric car.

Are EV Show Plates Road Legal on an Electric Car?

No. The "EV" in the name changes nothing about that answer. A show plate is never road legal, on any car, whatever it runs on. The rule is about what the plate is for, not what powers the vehicle behind it. An electric car still needs a correctly formatted road legal plate fitted any time it is driven or left on a public road, just like a petrol or diesel car does. A show plate exists for the times the car is off the road instead, parked up at a meet, sitting in a garage, or posed for photos.

Our own show plates page sets this out plainly, and the same answer applies to every electric car we make a show plate for. Checking what you cannot do with a show plate is worth doing before you order, so nothing about the purchase catches you out later.

What Is the Difference Between an EV Show Plate and a Road Legal Green Flash Plate?

A green flash plate is road legal. It carries a small green flash badge that marks the car as zero-emission, and it is only available for zero-emission vehicles, not hybrids. An EV show plate is something else entirely. It is not road legal under any badge, green flash included, because it never follows the road legal format in the first place. Our road legal plates are made to the DVLA's published rules (BS AU 145e), and we check ID and entitlement documents before we make one. A show plate works to the customer's own spacing and badge choice instead. That freedom is exactly why it cannot go on the road.

The badge choices on a road legal plate are fixed, because the format behind them is fixed too:

  • No badge
  • EU or GB
  • Green flash (zero-emission vehicles only, not hybrids)
  • UK
  • ENG
  • CYM
  • SCO

A show plate skips that list. It can carry any badge from our full show plate library, set out however you want, because it is not standing in for a road legal mark. Want a zero-emission look you can actually drive on? That is the green flash plate, and we have written separately about which style and finish suit an electric car on the road legal side.

Why Electric Car Owners Choose Show Plates for Display

Usually it comes down to one thing. The owner wants a plate that reflects the car rather than a standard black and yellow rectangle, and they are not planning to drive on it. Our full badge library runs to 41 categories and 347 badges. Add your own character spacing on top, plus bottom text of up to 60 characters, and you have far more to work with than a road legal plate allows.

In practice, that choice tends to get used in a few ways:

  • A one-off for a single show, meet or photo shoot, then the road legal plate goes straight back on
  • A permanent piece mounted in the garage or on a stand, never fitted to the car at all
  • A badge and bottom text chosen together to name a club, an event, or a personal detail about the car

Show Plates for Tesla and Other Electric Cars: Style Choices to Think About

Most requests we see for electric cars, Tesla included, go one of two ways. Some owners want it minimal: no badge, or one small one, to keep the car looking as clean as it already does. Others want the opposite. They pull something bold from the library and pair it with bottom text naming the car, a club or an event, to make a statement at a meet.

Neither is more correct than the other. It depends what the plate is for. A quiet garage display usually suits the minimal route. A plate going to a meet, where other owners will actually be looking at it, tends to suit the bolder one. Either way, you see the layout in our builder before the plate is made, so there are no surprises when it arrives.

What Does Display-Only Mean for an Electric Car Number Plate?

Display-only means built to be looked at, not driven on. That covers a specific set of things in practice:

  • Never fitted to the car while it is driven or parked on a public road
  • Open to any badge from the full 41-category library, not the fixed road legal list
  • Character spacing set to your own layout rather than the fixed road legal rules
  • Room for bottom text, up to 60 characters, which a road legal plate does not carry
  • Still the standard 520mm x 111mm size we use for every plate, show or road legal

Size does not move. Everything else around it does, and that is really the whole point of ordering a show plate over a road legal one.

Can You Use an EV Show Plate at a Car Show or Meet?

Yes, while the car is parked off the public road, say inside a showground, a private car park, or an indoor hall. The plate is there to be seen while the car sits still, not to be driven in on. If the car has to travel to or from the venue on a public road, it needs its correct road legal plates fitted for that journey.

A sensible way to run a show day looks like this:

  1. Drive to the venue with the road legal plates fitted
  2. Swap to the show plate once the car is parked and off the public road
  3. Swap the road legal plates back on before the drive home

It is an extra step. But it is the only way to get the display look at the event without the car ever being on the road without proper plates fitted.

Can I Display an EV Show Plate in My Garage?

Yes. A garage wall, a workshop shelf or a display stand is exactly what a show plate suits. Plenty of customers order one for this reason alone: nothing to do with the car on the road at all, just a plate styled to match it, kept indoors for display or for photos. There is no road question to settle here, because the plate never goes near a public road in the first place.

Custom Plates for EVs That Are Not Road Legal: What to Check Before You Order

A few checks before ordering help the plate do what you actually want from it:

  • Confirm you want a display plate, not a road legal one. For something you can drive on, order a road legal plate with the green flash badge instead
  • Choose the badge from the full library rather than the fixed road legal list, since this is where a show plate gives you far more room
  • Decide on bottom text if you want one, up to 60 characters, for a club name, an event or a personal line
  • Check the layout in the builder before you confirm it, since the spacing is yours to set
  • Keep your correct road legal plates ready and fitted for any journey on the public road

The most common mix-up we see is someone ordering a show plate expecting to drive on it, or ordering a road legal plate expecting the full badge choice. The two do different jobs. Sorting out which one you actually need, before you order, saves the disappointment of a plate that cannot do what you wanted it to.

How to Order an EV Show Plate

Set the badge, the spacing and any bottom text through our show plates builder, and check the layout before you confirm it. You can order it alongside a road legal plate or completely separately. The steps are straightforward:

  1. Pick your badge from the full library
  2. Set the spacing and add bottom text if you want it
  3. Review the layout on screen
  4. Confirm and order

Free Tracked24 delivery applies on qualifying orders, and anything ordered before 2pm is usually dispatched the same day. Not sure which badge or layout will actually suit the car? Call us on 07747 744407 before you order and we will talk it through with you.

EV Show Plate Questions We Get Asked

Q1 Do Show Plates Need a Green Flash Badge?

No. Green flash is a road legal badge for zero-emission vehicles. A show plate does not need it, and does not use it. It can carry any badge from the full library, whether the car is electric or not.

Q2 Is an EV Show Plate the Same Size as a Road Legal Plate?

Yes. Every plate we make is 520mm x 111mm, show or road legal, with no size choice either way. What changes is the badge you pick, how it is spaced, and whether there is bottom text underneath.

Q3 Can I Put a Show Plate on My Electric Car?

You can display one on the car while it is off the public road: at home, in a garage, or at a show. You cannot drive or park on the public road with it fitted. For anything you actually need to drive on, use a road legal plate instead, with the green flash badge if your car qualifies as zero-emission.
